Medication for dental appointments

Patients experiencing dental anxiety often seek medication to alleviate their concerns before a dental appointments. While sedatives like Diazepam are commonly requested, GPs are not equipped to prescribe these medications for dental procedures. This is due to not having specialised dental training and limited understanding of the specific requirements for each dental procedure. It is therefore not possible for us to determine which medications are safe to use, so we are unable to prescribe.

Dentists, on the other hand, possess the necessary expertise and are authorised to prescribe medications from the Dental Formulary. They can assess individual cases and determine the most appropriate treatment for each patient.

If you have concerns about an upcoming dental visit or procedure, it is advisable to consult directly with your dentist. They can provide tailored advice and, if necessary, prescribe suitable medication to manage your anxiety effectively.
